| As Swede as it Gets |
By Canucks Fanz Columnist: Zane JiwaHow “Swede” is it to hear the Vancouver Canucks local broadcasters going berserk after another tally by Daniel Sedin? How ear-warming is it when we hear the infamous “Henrik to his brother Daniel, shoots, scores!” line? To the ears and eyes of the “Canuck” world, the slick sound of the GM Place goal horn is just as soothing as sex, and more adrenaline pumping than sky diving. With goals being scored about as often as I score with a girl, the tremendous play of Daniel and Henrik Sedin has been greatly welcomed by the fans of Vancouver. It was not so long ago when the Canucks would go out and score five goals a game, especially when the line infamously known as the “Westcoast Express” was at its peak, and scoring goals was like taking candy from a baby. However, in this day and age, this new and improved Canucks team has started to develop a new identity, and with the main support of Daniel Sedin, Henrik Sedin and acrobat goalie Roberto Luongo, there is no stopping the team. Currently tied with rival Minnesota Wild for first place in the Northwest Division, this Canucks team has to commend the stellar play of the Sedin brothers. After being repeatedly knocked around the league for their “sissy” play, the two Ornskoldsvik natives have emerged as top players in the league, and although hugely underrated by other teams, the Sedin’s know that their play has become exceptional, and the city of Vancouver now expects nothing less. Playing the tricky and skillful game of cycling, the two Swedes have together come into their own and with immense support from the rest of the team, look to fly this Canucks team to the top of the standings. Six foot-one inch Daniel Sedin has undoubtedly found his scoring touch, leading the team in goals (with 19), and while doing so is responsible for 17.8% of the team’s goals thus far. He is on pace to pass is scoring mark from last year, and nearly match his eighty-four point season just a year ago. Henrik on the other hand, like his twin, has greatly improved his game, but instead of racking up the goals, has been setting up goals from everywhere on the ice. Breaking Andre Boudrias’s single season club record of sixty-two assists, the slightly taller brother amassed seventy-one assists, and again, looks close to repeating the same feat this year. With the breath taking passes by Henrik Sedin and the goal scorer’s touch Daniel Sedin possesses, the twins can turn any player on the team into a prominent one. With the last man on the Sedin line usually being a “third wheel,” the whole team truly prospers from the paramount play of Henrik and Daniel.
