Continuing with our past teammates theme, Canucks Fanz columnist Farhan Devji recently caught up with Jason Garrison, who played with Mason Raymond for two years at Minnesota Duluth. Jason shared with us some of his insights on Mason Raymond the hockey player, and some “dirt” on Mason Raymond the person.
By Canucks Fanz Columnist: Farhan Devji With all the attention Mason Raymond has received this training camp; it’s now essentially common knowledge that he is a true talent on the ice. When asked about Raymond’s potential, Vancouver Canucks General Manager Dave Nonis has repeatedly brought up the fact that Raymond was a WCHA first all-star last season, while one of the top National Hockey League prospects in Jonathan Toews was only a second team all-star in the same league. Jason Garrison sheds some light on the comparison. “Between the two players, I feel they were both very dominant in our league last year,” said Garrison. “Obviously this shows as they are at the top level right now.” Why was Mason Raymond so dominant? “From practicing with “Mase” and playing with him for two years, the reason why he is so dominant is because of his speed and shot,” said the native of Burnaby, British Columbia. “He is the quickest skater I have played with especially in corners. He is extremely shifty and can still see the ice to make the right plays.”
Jason went on to say that Raymond’s skill isn’t the only reason why he is turning out to be a pure talent. “Mason, as a teammate, was an extremely hard worker on the ice,” said Garrison. “He always liked to have fun but when it came to improving his game and others he was dead serious.” Raymond survived the last round of cuts made by the Vancouver Canucks yesterday and therefore if you don’t know what type of player he is already, you will soon. But what type of person is Mason Raymond? “He was very involved with his family as they are extremely important to him,” said Garrison. “At times I felt like his mom because I cooked for him and helped him out in class with his homework.”
What is something the casual fan wouldn’t know about our star in the making Mason Raymond? “Something that’s kind of an inside joke between us is that deep down, Mason is a Ford truck lover,” said Garrison. “He also really likes his Milkshakes that I used to have to make for him.” Jason, who is entering his third season with the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs, went on to say: “Mase always wanted to know the little bits of gossip going on; either he was spilling the beans on someone or forcing it out.” Raymond is slated to skate alongside the Sedins when the Canucks hit the ice for their season opener Friday night at home to the Sharks. |
