October saw the Giants with more home games than road. And really their road games were close to home (Chilliwack, Seattle, etc.). In November the Giant will take a long trip out to Lethbridge as well as Medicine Hat. Good chance to spend some time on the bus and bond for the team.
Giants last week had mixed results. They gutted out a good OT win against the visiting MJ Warriors highlighted by the great play of captain Spencer Machacek who blocked down a pass at the Warriors line off his shins and then came in alone on Joey Perricone and roofed it to win the game with 44 seconds left in OT. Then the next night in Kamloops, Repik has an inspired game and grabs 2G 1A in the first period. And that is how the score would stay till the final buzzer as Tyson Sexsmith picks up his 3rd shutout of the season. Then 2 days later the Giants end up on the wrong side of a 3-0 score against a PG team that they "should" beat.
This weekend the Giants hit the road for another 3 in 3 weekend. Friday in Tri-City, Saturday in Spokane and then Sunday out in the Whack. Giants are probably hoping for a little revenge against the Chiefs after getting shutout 2-0 back in October at home.
Owners Nephew Quits Kind of out of the blue news when the nephew of majority owner Ron Toigo, Nolan, decides that he doesn't want to play WHL hockey anymore. It must have been hard for him to walk into the dressing room and tell his teammates. But I can't imagine what it must have felt like to walk into Ron's office and break the news to him. Especially since Nolan was taken 10th round in the Bantam Draft. Most people feel that Nolan was a pitty pick by his uncle. But Nolan really could play at ths level. And played very well when moved to the wing from the blue line.
Good luck to Nolan in what ever you decide to do.
Giants Alumni Milan Lucic is stealing most of the headlines these days when people talk about Giants Alumni (although there is still a chance that he could come back). But here are a few other players that you don't here too much about.
Darrell May: Darrell is into his 3rd year with the UBC T-Birds and was named the Canada West Player of the Week for the week ending Oct. 28th. Darrell has been one of UBC's most consistant players in the past couple of years and is a big reason why the T-Birds are off to a 6-2 start this season including a sweep of the powerhouse UofA Golden Bears.
Mitch Bartley: Like Darrell, Mitch decided to make good use of his WHL scholarship and play for UBC. He has run into a bit of tough luck though this year as a broken leg 2 weeks ago has ended his season. Mitch brough a tough forechecking game and his nice pass last year which UBC seemed to be missing. A welcome addition for sure.
Mark Fistric: Will always be remembered as the captain that brought the Giants their first of what will hopefully be many WHL titles. A rock on the blueline. But now he is defending the blue line for the Iowa Stars of the AHL (along with ex-Canuck Nolan ). Mark had a very good rookie season last year. He was the first Iowa Star to play all 80 regular season game (as well as 12 Calder Cup Playoff game) and was nominated for the AHL Ironman award.
